2.2.4 Grafted polypropylene
Graft polypropylene can also be called graft modified polypropylene. It is prepared by suspending isotactic polypropylene or random polypropylene in solvent or dissolving it in solvent under high temperature, using organic oxide as initiator, and graft copolymerizing with methyl methacrylate or styrene, vinyl acetate and vinyl acetate.
(1) Performance characteristics
The properties of grafted polypropylene vary with the type of polypropylene used for grafting, the type, length and number of grafted segments, and the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of grafted polypropylene. Grafting elastic segments onto polypropylene molecular chains can improve the impact strength and low-temperature properties of polypropylene; If appropriate polar groups are grafted onto the molecular chain of polypropylene, its adhesion property can be improved.
The purpose of grafting polypropylene is to improve the tensile strength and impact strength of polypropylene; Another point is to improve the adhesion between polypropylene and other materials. The polar branched chain graft copolymer based on polypropylene can not only maintain the strength, drug resistance and weather resistance of the original polypropylene, but also firmly adhere to polyamide, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, metal, glass, wood and paper. In addition, the grafted polypropylene has excellent characteristics of aging resistance, water immersion, boiling water treatment and cooking treatment.
See Table 2-50 for the properties of PP grafted by Mitsui Petrochemical Company. See Table 2-51 for the adhesive properties of polypropylene and maleic anhydride graft copolymer.
(2) Forming method and application
Graft polypropylene can be extruded into pipes and plates by an extruder, and extruded into blown film and vacuum molded products. In addition, it can also be used for powder coating and mixing with polyethylene and polypropylene resin. The specific applications are as follows.
① It can be used as adhesive for bonding and laminating polyethylene and polypropylene films with nylon, aluminum foil, paper, cloth and other plastic films to make packaging materials with good air tightness.
② Extruded pipes, plates and other products are used instead of cross-linked polyethylene products.
③ As a coating, it is used for protective coating of steel products (plates and tubes) and aluminum plates, covering of wires and cables, and internal and external coating of edible cans.
④ Used as modifier to improve the properties of glass fiber reinforced polypropylene; Improve the compatibility of polyethylene, polypropylene and nylon, and improve the toughness of nylon.
